Sundance unveils key films for 2012 festival

The Sundance Film festival, the top U.S. gathering for independent cinema, on Wednesday unveiled its competitive lineup for 2012, some of which will become the most talked-about movies of the upcoming year.

The 58 movies, both narrative features and documentaries, cover a range of topics, but festival organizers said at least one theme emerged among the 16 U.S. features in competition: characters are searching for deeper meaning to their lives in an often confusing and troubling world.

"(Filmmakers) seem to be questioning the idea of marriage and family, the whole notion of what family is. I found that a lot -- questioning ideas of the American Dream," festival director John Cooper told Reuters.

Overall, 4,042 features films from around the world were submitted for the festival that is backed by Robert Redford's Sundance Institute for filmmaking and is the premiere U.S. event for movies made outside Hollywood's major studios.

Each year, many movies that screen at Sundance will become the darlings of critics in art houses, and some will compete for honors in Hollywood's awards season. Big successes from previous Sundance festival's include comedy "Little Miss Sunshine" and documentary "An Inconvenient Truth."

Cooper said weak economies around the world have challenged filmmakers to search wider and dig deeper for funding to make movies, and that fact has led to more creative thinking and greater focus in the stories heading to silver screens.

"In times of economic crisis, art tends to thrive. I'm not sure why that is, but it seems it just happens," he said. "A creative bar is set by each year as filmmakers see the films that are successful commercially and with critics, and filmmakers are aware they have to be a little bit better."

DAY ONE, AND BEYOND

The upcoming 2012 Sundance kicks off on January 19 with a series of "Day One" screenings comprised of one feature and one documentary from each of the U.S. films and world cinema sections -- movies made outside the United States.

The U.S. first day feature is director Todd Louiso's "Hello I Must Be Going," which tells of a 35-year-old woman who moves back into the home of her parents. The Day One U.S. documentary is "The Queen of Versailles," which tells of a wealthy couple building the biggest house in America -- 90,000 square feet -- until it is foreclosed upon.

Other feature film titles in the U.S. competition include "The End of Love," which looks at one young father whose life unravels at the death of his wife, and "Middle of Nowhere" about a woman who struggles to maintain her marriage and sense of self after her husband lands in jail.

U.S. documentaries include "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" about the Chinese artist and political activist and "ME at the ZOO," which tells of video blogger Chris Crocker.

The feature films in the world cinema competition are a wide-ranging bunch that include the title "L," a Greek movie about a man who lives in his car and is troubled by motorcycle riders, and "The Last Elvis" ("El Ultimo Elvis"), which tells of an Elvis impersonator in Buenos Aires.

Cooper said many of world cinema documentaries take on big topics, especially among documentaries where titles include "1/2 Revolution" about this year's overthrow of the Egyptian government, and "China Heavyweight" which uses boxing to look at changing lifestyles in that fast-growing country.

They are "saying here's solutions and telling us what we can do," said Cooper. "I think that's the optimistic part. There are a lot of calls to action, which is exciting."

The competition movies earn much of the attention at Sundance, but there are sections for world premieres that will include major stars, as well as ultra low-budget movies, short films and other movies whose selection will be named in coming days.

Overall, this year's festival will feature 110 movies from 31 countries and 46 first-time filmmakers. The festival begins on January 19, 2012 and runs through January 29. SOURCE

BET AWARDS RECAP, BET CYPHER OCTOBER 11TH, 2011

ACCORDING TO THE GOOD PEOPLE OVER AT The BoomBox :::  The 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards offered bars upon bars from some of rap's finest MCs. From T.I., Young Jeezy, Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean to Heavy D and more Young Jeezy, 'F.A.M.E.' & T.I., 'I'm Flexin'' Young Jeezy came out of the shadows, decked out in all-white everything and shades, commencing the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards with a performance of his new hit, 'F.A.M.E.' With fire lighting up both sides of the stage, the trap star heated up the center floor with his rhymes. A surprise was the song's featured MC T.I., who came out of the shadows dressed in a grey Gucci sweatsuit. "What's up, world?" he shouted before moving into his verse. The formerly incarcerated rapper closed the set with his new Big K.R.I.T.-produced track, 'I'm Flexin'.' "A-Town, we back!" Tip stated before exiting the stage. Wiz Khalifa, 'Taylor Gang' Featuring Chevy Woods  A shirtless Wiz jumped around the stage with more stamina than the Energizer Bunny. Rocking khaki cut-off shorts and knee-high tube socks with his sneaks, the slim-waisted rapper performed with his 'Taylor Gang' collaborator Chevy Woods in front of a backdrop of flashing lights and flames. Wale, 'That Way' & Meek Mill, 'I'ma Boss' Featuring Rick Ross With a growing empire, it only makes sense that Maybach Music Group's logo would boast the power color of red as its signees and label boss took the stage. Before Waleand Meek Mill took their turn on the mic, veteran R&B singer El Debarge crooned a few lyrics, though he sounded rusty and in need of some more vocal practice. The 'Ambition' creator, donning a denim jacket and Nike Air Mags, then graced the stage to perform his hit 'That Way,' preceding his MMG colleague Meek's anthemic track 'I'ma Boss,' of course which spawned an assist from Ricky Rozay, who was dressed in a sateen navy tracksuit. DMX 'Get at Me Dog,' 'Ruff Ryders' Anthem,' 'Party Up (Up in Here)' DMX brought it back to the old school with a rap medley of throw-back jams. The recently-released-from-jail rapper came back strong with three of his classics, the first two from '98 and the last from 2000, while sporting a puffy vest, low slung jeans and silver studded black T. Lupe Fiasco, 'Words I Never Said' Chi-town's conscious rhymer performed his 'Lasers' single, 'Words I Never Said,' sansSkylar Grey, but instead, brought out a woman cloaked in a black mask to sing the hook. As Fiasco rapped through the political tune with a full band behind him, he rocked his mic -- decorated with a flag representing Palestine -- to and fro. His eyes stayed shut during his entire set, even when rocking out during the mysterious woman's -- she turned out to be Erykah Badu -- crooning. The song's lyrics displayed on a screen behind the rhymer, who was decked out in a black T-shirt decorated with the words "occupy" to pay homage to the recent Occupy Wall Street protests. Big Sean, 'I Do It,' Big Sean & Roscoe Dash, 'Marvin and Chardonnay' Jean vest, black leather shirt and red hoodie-rockin' Big Sean did his thing with 'I Do It' while black-and-white animation rolled on the jumbo TV screen in the background. Sean was joined by a bicep-flashing Roscoe Dash, who donned an army green zipper-clad vest with a silver "R" screen printed on the back. The two performed their Kanye West-assisted 'Marvin and Chardonnay,' but no appearance from Yeezy himself for this stage collab, the guys held it down as a twosome, all the same. Heavy D 'Nuttin' But Love,' 'Is It Good to You,' 'Now That We Found Love' Featuring Tyrese The 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards took viewers on a trip down memory lane when late '80s rap star Heavy D grabbed the mic for a special show of his classic hits. Opening his set with a medley that included the famed 'Teach Me How to Dougie' dance, Heavy proved age is nothing but a number as he kicked off some dance moves like a rhymer half his age. He eased through his famed tracks 'Nuttin' But Love,' 'Is It Good to You' and 'Now That We Found Love,' which brought out an all-black everything sportingTyrese to sing the hook.
